Demonstration of Titanium(IV) with hydrogen peroxide
Chemicals needed
distilled water
titanyl sulfate solution (preparation)
hydrogen peroxide solution 3,5 %
Equipment needed
test tube
Test procedure
- 4-5 drops of titanyl sulfate solution into the tube, then add 1 ml of water and sway back and forth.
- Now one adds 2-3 drops of hydrogen peroxide solution 3,5%. An orange coloration develops.
Disposal
- One can dispose of the diluted residues into the drainage.
Elucidation
A colored peroxo complex is formed:
[Ti(OH)3(H2O)3]+ + H2O2 --> [Ti(O2)OH(H2O)3]+ + 2 H2O
